ABOUT ABOUT

Join urban ecology expert David Hewitt for a walk along the Frankford Creek Watershed. David will share the history of the site, and its hydrology (that is, how water moves around there, and how that has changed through time), and we will walk through the forested area to look at and identify trees. The walk will take about 2 hours and begin at Ferko Playground. This event is a collaboration between the Fairmount Park Conservancy and TTF Watershed Partnership.

About David Hewitt: David Hewitt has been working with plants, animals, soils and water for more than twenty years, starting when he began working on small  farms in upstate New York.  Currently, he serves in a variety of roles  at local institutions, including the Wagner Free Institute of Science;  he is also a lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania and a research  associate in the Department of Botany at the Academy of Natural  Sciences. He served as an AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow  in Washington, DC, working in agricultural policy. His current  research focuses on urban parkland ecology and management, and related  public health issues.  He has also worked on botanical surveys,  mycological studies, and the history of botany.  David has B.A. in  biology from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. from the  Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard  University.

About TTF Watershed Partnership: Here at Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership, we’re all about connecting people to their creeks…because our mission is to improve the health of our watershed by engaging our communities in education, stewardship, restoration, and advocacy. Across our watershed – from the headwaters in our upstream communities of Abington, Cheltenham, Jenkintown, Rockledge, and Springfield in Montgomery County – to our downstream neighborhoods in North, Northeast, and Northwest Philadelphia – we implement programs that educate neighbors and stakeholders about clean water issues and how we can all make a difference in own backyards, parks, and communities.
